Letter from the President
Dear Chamber members,

Become engaged with the Oakland business community

Build your business by networking! Have you met anyone new in the past week? If not and you're in business it's time to meet your fellow Oakland business members!

Not your thing? It's time to rethink how to meet new customers or a member who can refer you to a friend or family member.

Retool your approach...develop an elevator speech that is 10 seconds in length that lets others know who you are and what kind of business you are seeking!

Plan to attend any or all of the following events, each of which has a unique opportunity to network and meet fellow Chamber members:
East Bay Women in Business Luncheon, Aug. 7
Breakfast at the Chamber, Aug. 20
Inside Oakland Breakfast Forum, Aug. 21
Business After Hours Mixer, Pican Restaurant, Aug. 27
Golf Classic & Clinic, Aug. 31
Chamber Day with the A's, Sept. 21
      Coming Soon - Bay Cruise

Or attend a Chamber committee meeting and engage with our efforts for a more business-friendly city!

Of note, more and more members are calling about the newly established parking meter increase and the impact on their businesses in number of customers. Customers are complaining as well! Send your comments to speterson@oaklandchamber.com or jharaburda@oaklandchamber.com.

The City Council is out of session until September, but we will make your opinions known at that time!

You can read about the most recent parking developments in the recent News Release from the city: "City of Oakland Launches Program to Ease Meter Parking".

God Bless America!

Chamber Day with the A's set for Sept. 21
On Monday evening, Sept. 21, when the Oakland A's face their division rivals, the Texas Rangers, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce will present "Chamber Day with the A's" at Network Associates Coliseum.

Join us to show support for the A's and watch the young players who will take a major role in a winning effort next year.

For a ticket price of only $29, Chamber members can reserve a seat in the Coliseum's Home Run Plaza in left field and enjoy unlimited food and drink (water and soft drinks). Besides the opportunity to watch Major League baseball and cheer on the A's, the event will present an excellent opportunity to network with other local businesspeople in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Tickets for the Sept. 21 event are available here, or contact Morgan Crow at the Chamber at (510) 874-4800, ext. 321 or at mcrow@oaklandchamber.com.

Pican is located at 2295 Broadway. The mixer will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is free for Chamber members and only $10 for non-members. RSVP or meet us there!

Certification Seminars
The Chamber and Employers Group have agreed to offer a series of free seminars for our members that will offer certification. The program will begin Sept. 8 and run weekly through Oct. 27. The Human Resources Generalist Certificate program has everything you need.

With a focus on the most critical issues of HR, this series better prepares those newer to HR to effectively handle the issues they face on a daily basis. The program is geared to individuals who are new to HR (less than three years of experience). You can sign up for the full course OR individual classes at your convenience.  Learn more and RSVP here.
