Letter from the President |
Dear members and friends,
Supporting each other
Members - Have you opened
your Chamber Membership
Directory to search for
companies with whom to do
business? Now, more than
ever, it's important to
support each other! Making
sure your dollars support
other Chamber members also
helps the Chamber stay
strong, vibrant, and able to
assist all of you!
Advocating for fiscal
reform on behalf of the City
of Oakland
We continue to press city of
Oakland staff and elected
leaders to take steps now to
avert an even greater fiscal
crisis than the one we are
now facing. While the City
Council has cut nearly $170
million from its General
Purpose Fund (GPF) budget
over the past year and a
half, no programs have been
cut! And while layoffs have
cut GPF-funded staff by 12
percent, it only reduced the
city's staff costs by 3
percent!
To make a real difference in
the city's financial
solvency, the City Council
must: (1) roll back
compensation levels (and
programs where possible) to
2004 levels (averting more
layoffs and cuts to
essential services); (2)
implement a two-tiered
pension system by which new
employees do not receive
defined benefits, but rather
more typical 401(K)s, and
raise the minimum retirement
age to 65; and (3) negotiate
with public sector unions -
particularly public safety -
to ensure city employees pay
their fair share into their
own retirement
contributions.
We at the Chamber have
reduced our own costs as I'm
sure many of you have. We
are asking city officials to
tighten their belts and pare
back non-essential services
and bring employee salaries
back to 2004 levels.
You are the job-generators,
the taxpayers...let your
opinions be heard! Call or
email your Council
representative and encourage
pension reform and a further
reduction in the cost of
city operations by further
reductions in compensation.
