Oakland public education is on the rise
The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), directed by strong leadership and supported by some of the nation’s leading educational organizations, has made tremendous improvements in its ability to achieve positive academic outcomes for its students.
For the past two years, the Oakland Unified School District has pursued an unprecedented comprehensive reform effort entitled Expect Success!. The goal of this effort is to continue OUSD as an efficient, academically focused district that is equipped with the tools, systems, personnel and accountability required to raise the achievement levels of Oakland students.
Higher education is the key to providing California’s citizens with the capacity, knowledge and skills to develop and maintain a thriving economy and to provide maximum opportunity for personal growth and accomplishment.
At OUSD, there are six critical keys to success – every principal is an instructional leader and entrepreneur; the schools control their own budgets; there’s an accountability for performance and budgets; there’s a burning focus on student achievement; each school is a small community of learners, and there are choices for students among unique schools.
It’s through these keys to success – as well as student attendance, student achievement, and the push to become more efficient and cost effective – that the Oakland schools will indeed develop generations of learners who will help local businesses prosper in the years ahead.
Higher Education
Oakland’s higher education system, one of the finest in the state, includes Holy Names University, Mills College, Patten College, Samuel Merritt College, and community schools Laney College and Merritt College.
In addition, adult education courses are offered by St. Mary’s College, the University of California, and the University of Phoenix.
